The most important function of County government is to keep its citizens safe. The County does this primarily through the Sheriff’s Office, which is the first line of defense. That first line of responders also includes each of the Constable offices and the Fire Marshal’s office, all of whom act as certified peace officers. This first line of law enforcement is reinforced by the efforts of the District Attorney’s office to prosecute offenders and the judicial branch (District Judges, County Courts at Law Judges, and Justices of the Peace), who ensure that Constitutional rights are preserved and the rule of law is upheld in every case. Together, these elected officials and their offices work in tandem to make this County safe and to deter and punish those who break the law. The County Judge’s office should support these functions by ensuring they have the resources needed to undertake these crucial responsibilities.
